CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Assists students in developing their real world oral communication skills. It is intended that students will capture the dynamics of todays business realities and see the benefits of effective communication. Selection of topics, library research, analysis, oral style, use of visual aids, and preparation and delivery of various types of speeches and oral presentations are included.

LEARNING OUTCOME: When they complete this course, successful students will be able to speak effectively and comfortably to audiences they dont select.

REQUIRED MATERIALS: 1) The Natural Speaker & How to Think About Weird Things 2) One 60-min. DVD-R videodisk 3) A portfolio (to be explained in class) 4) A smiling face for photos

EVALUATION RUBRICS: You'll complete rubrics for each others speeches and return them by the end of speech days. You'll also turn in self-evaluation rubric forms for graded speeches. I'll return evaluation forms to you ASAP.

TOPICS / OUTLINES / CITATIONS:

All speech topics require my prior approval. Your speech outlines and research citations in APA format should be typed; you'll include them in your portfolio. I'll terminate speeches in which you cover unapproved topics or use inappropriate material or language.

NOTE: You should submit three (3) citations with each outline after speech #1; that one doesn't require any.

Note: The web is great for seeking information, but I will NOT accept URLs as citations for your speeches. Please use books, magazines, interviews, or periodicals for your citations. The library's online ProQuest database links well to these resources; I urge you to learn how to use it!

POLICIES:

Respect: I expect you to show respect for each other and me. Please follow the Golden Rule.

Attendance: You can attain and show expected learning outcomes in this course only by participating in it. After 5 days of sick leave, I'll lower your final grade by one letter per day you miss.

Missed speeches: It's up to you to keep track of the schedule for each speech. If you miss any speech, graded, or ungraded, you will lose 15 points and be expected to complete a makeup assignment of my choice by the beginning of the next speech in order to gain the other 85 points. IF YOU MISS MORE THAN ONE SPEECH, YOU'LL FAIL THE CLASS.

Plagiarism: Using others words without attribution is theft. You may fail an assignment or the course if you plagiarize.

GRADING:

You may accumulate up to 510 points in this course:

I. THREE GRADED SPEECHES--300 POINTS

Speech #2 100 pts.: Demonstration, 5-7 min.
Speech #4 100 pts.: Why You Should Hire Me
Speech #6 100 pts.: Paired speech, 10-14 min.

II. THREE UNGRADED SPEECHES/CRITIQUES OF SIX PUBLIC SPEECHES--100 POINTS

You'll write critiques of a) 3 significant past speeches and b) 3 live community speeches which you attend this quarter. In Speech #3 and Speech #5 you'll present your critiques orally to your fellow students. ALL THREE UNGRADED SPEECHES MUST BE GIVEN to earn the 100 points.

III. PUBLIC SPEAKING PORTFOLIO--100 POINTS You'll include ideas, thoughts for the week, humor, what you learned, speech outlines and critiques, presentation materials, etc.

IV. PROFESSIONALISM:

--Minus 10 points for each late speech, graded or ungraded, for whatever reason.

--Plus 5 points at the end of the quarter for presenting all 7 speeches on time.

--Plus 5points at the end of the quarter for perfect attendance.
